E070001 Combined safety. Rupture disk directly in
front of the safety valve
[Abstract]: Safety considerations when
combining rupture discs in series with a safety valve are considered. This
includes the use of a non-splintering disc. The combination of the two
systems results in the advantages of both. The rupture disk and the
re-closing of relief out-lets by the valve allows plant operations to
continue.
E070002 Tyco fulfills all tanker valve requirements
[Abstract]: The UK road tanker manufacturer
Clayton Commercials has met most of its tanker valve requirements using a
single source, Tyco Valves and Controls. Tankers produced by Clayton are
used throughout industry for transporting a wide range of products, from
food to hazardous chemicals and bitumen. The valve requirements are dictated
by the application itself or the end user's specifications. For use on
chemical carrying road tankers, Tyco supplies a large number of lined
butterfly valves from its Neotecha range, incorporating PTFE-lined bodies
and PFA encapsulated-discs. These can withstand the majority of chemical
products. To meet the special requirements of its bitumen road tankers,
Clayton uses Winn high performance butterfly valves with plasma nitrided
discs and inconel nitrided seats. Inherently fire-safe, these metal to metal
valves are ideal for withstanding the abrasive nature of the bitumen and the
extreme temperatures of up to 250°C.
For hygienic duties, Clayton uses Keystone rubber lined butterfly valves
with a one-piece wafer-thin disc/stem providing positive disc control with
minimum flow obstruction. Featuring a crevice-free design, the Keystone
valve eliminates the possibility of product entrapment and contamination.
Clayton also uses a number of one-piece Ultra-Seal ball valves from the
Hindle range for air lines, sampling points and when users have specified
ball valves.
E070003 Check valve caused plant explosion
[Abstract]: A new report from the US EPA and
OSHA indicates that the internal failure and blowout of a check valve was to
blame for a chemicals explosion at Shell Chemical’s plant at Deer Park, TX
in 1997. This caused a flammable gas leak and vapour cloud which ignited. A
copy of the report can be found athttp://www.epa.gov/ceppo/acchis.html. This
includes recommendations on preventing such an accident from occurring in
the future.
E070004 Fires, vessels and the pressure relief valve
[Abstract]: Pressure relief valve (PRV)
design for vessel protection from fire is not straightforward and four
scenarios: a liquid full vessel; an adequate liquid level; an inadequate
liquid level; and gas or vapour filled vessel, must be considered. The
application of appropriate equations to determine the area of an external
fire zone, heat transferred to liquids in protected vessels, the venting
rate and finally to calculate the PRV area, for the first two scenarios are
described and complement the two other scenarios examined in an earlier
article.
E070005 New diaphragm valve interlock will not jam
[Abstract]: Smith Flow Control has introduced
the new Ellis type GG safety interlock which is designed for use with
diaphragm valves. This can be adjusted to any variations in the valve's
final closed position to enable the key to be freed. Under normal operating
environments, the closed position of a diaphragm valve can vary; as most
interlocks require valves to have a set closing position before the key can
be released to lock the valve, this variation can have an adverse effect on
an interlock's operational effectiveness. It can even result in the key
becoming jammed. The Ellis GG interlock overcomes this problem by allowing
the closed, key-release position to be easily adjusted to accommodate any
variations in the diaphragm valve's positioning.
E070006 Innovative safety solution for valve
change-over procedure
[Abstract]: Process safety specialist Smith Flow
Control has designed an innovative interlocking system for the change-over
sequence between relief valves at Norsk Hydro's Rafnes Petrochemical
Refinery in southern Norway. At the refinery, the change-over of relief
valves for the cooling water system is achieved using handwheel-operated
3-way diverter globe valves, which divert the process flow from one relief
valve to another. Under these conditions, partial valve operation to its
mid-position must be strictly controlled.
E070007 Oil Well Discovers Smart Technology
[Abstract]: Editor's Note: Joe Gross will tell you that
years of experience with offshore oil wells have taught him that the oil
production process can be a demanding master."0il wells are sensitive
creatures," he says. "They are sbject to upset at the slightest provocation.
" An upset oil well led Gross, the president of Alaskan- based Alpine Valve
& Control Systems, to Unocal Alaska' s Monopod offshore platform in the
Upper Cook Inlet. Unoca] is a leading natural gas and crude oil exploration
and production company. Installed in 1967, its Monopod platform was one of
the first deployed in the Cook Inlet. Gross worked closely with Just us
Hinks, a Unocal production engineer, to stabilize the well's performance and
thus increase revenue. In the following article, they share their experience
determining what was behind the well's production problems and how they
developed a solution.
E070008 Drain Valve
[Abstract] :The EDV-2006 Terminator solenoid
drain valve is designed as a reliable means of removing condensate from air
systems. It drains compressed air equipment including filters, dryers, drop
legs, receiver tanks, separators, and aftercoolers. This valve has
adjustable opentimes and cycle times, an integrated "Y" strainer, and a
convenient test function which enhances performance. 'This drain valve is

E070009 Conbraco Industries. Inc.
[Abstract] :Apollo ball valves have a following in the
CPI. Research shows that Apollo ball valves are used in 65% of U.S. chemical
plants. Consistently the first or second choice of valve specifiers, they're
known for their long life and lower installed costs in tough applications.
That' s why chemical industry valve users around the globe depend on Apollo
top entry and end entry ball valves. Whether you choose carbon steel,
stainless steel or exotic alloys, they are 100 % American-made, industrial
strength workhorses.
E070010 Flowserve Corporation
[Abstract] :Flowserve has more than one million
pumps working in a broad range of industrial applications, and is the
premier manufacturer of pumps for the chemical processing petroleum and
power generating industries. Flowserve valves, valve actuators and valve
automation systems are widely insta11ed in refineries, chemical plants,
pharmaceutical, food and other processing applications.
E070011 A class of discontinuous dynamical systems I.
An ideal gas -liquid system
[Abstract]: When a liquid and a gas are sent into a
closed system and withdrawn through a single outlet, discontinuous behaviour
results. Two different models are applicable to this system depending on
whether the liquid or the gas flows out. The system switches between the gas
flow and the liquid flow incessant]y, reaching a state of sliding motion (F
i ] ippov, Differential Equations with Discontinous Right and Sides.
Mathematics and its Applications (Soviet Series), Kluwer, Dordrecht, 1988).
It is shown that the state of sliding motion is reached from all starting
positions. The sliding motion is also shown to be stable. The steady state
of the sliding motion can also be considered as a time- averaged steady
state. Simulation results support these predictions. Similar results are
obtained in the presence of a control valve.
E070012 Accuracy of Safety Valve Flushing Two-phase
Mass Flow Capacity Sizing
[Abstract] :The method specified in ISO/CD 4126-10
exhibits the highest accuracy compared to other models used in industry and
academia. At the same time it allows for an oversizing of the necessary
relief area under all test conditions. The average or statistical
reproductive accuracy is characterized by an unacceptable logarithmic
scatter of about 80%.
E070013 Rising plug style Valve for Process
Instrumentation Applications
[Abstract] :Parker Instrumentation has developed a new
rising plug style valve for process instrumentation applications. A patented
design provides users with a valve solution for applications where
contaminated media can lead to premature valve failure. Called the HRPV
Series, the rising plug valve's "straight-through" design supports higher
flow rates than needle valves, helping to avoid the build - up of deposits.
It additionally allows cleaning to take place by rodding.
E070014 Instruments Directly Connected to Process
Piping
[Abstract]: With the Close Coupled instrument Mounting
Solution(CCIMS), Parker Instrumentation has launched a new integrated
mounting and manifold block that connects instruments directly to process
piping, thereby reducing the number of joints, and therefore potential leak
paths. CCIMS allows pressure transmitters to be mounted directly onto an
orifice plate assembly in less than 30 min, typically replacing hand crafted
assemblies of discrete tubing, joint and.- valve components that can take
anywhere from one to three man-days to fabricate.
E070015 Free Guide to Ball Valve Family
[Abstract]:Parker Instrumentation has published a guide
to its high-performance instrumentation ball valve family for instrument and
process applications, called Hi-Pro. The novel two-piece Construction
reduces potential leak paths to a minimum.
E070016 Antitamper Valve Lock
[Abstract]: The new Anti-Tamper Lock (ATL) from
Smith Flow Control secures companies’ assets by ensuring valves and
actuators are only operated by authorized individuals. The way ATL works is
very simple: The standard condition of the device in service is locked
(key-free), with the handwheel free-rotating.
E070017 Forged Steel Valve Division Sold
[Abstract]: Conbraco Industries Inc. has
completed the sale of its RP&C forged steel valve division to Bonney Forge
Corporation of Mt. Union, Pennsylvania. The RP&C sales off ice as well as
all inventory will move to the Bonney Forge headquarters in Pennsylvania.
E070018 Flow Reaction Forces upon Blowdown of Safety
Valves
[Abstract] :'The activation of safety valves causes the
development of flow reaction forces that have to be transferred in an
adequate way via the piping to the steel structure or via the connected
vessel, into the foundation. If the safety valve outlet piping is connected
to a blowdown system or, in case of blowing off into the atmosphere, are
equipped with a T-piece at the outlet, the stationary reaction forces are
compensated completely. The transient opening process, however, develops
flow reaction forces which culminate in peaks of short duration. In this
article, a simple method will be proposed for the estimation of the
resulting reaction forces as a function of the length of the pipe at the
safety valve outlet. CFD calculations and blowdown tests executed with a
full-lift safety valve have confirmed this method on principle. Special
importance is attributed to the short duration of the effect of the reaction
forces which seems to have only a negligible impact on the supporting steel
structure.
E070019 Safety board
cites lack of valve in worker death
[Abstract]: The lack of a tank emergency
pressure valve resulted in the death of one worker and the evacuation of 26
residents and a “shelter in place” warning for 1500 others living near the
D.D.Williamson & Co. chemical plant in Louisville.
E070020 Weir flow and liquid height on sieve and
valve trays
[Abstract]:Mechanisms
for the flow of liquid over outlet weirs of distillation and absorption
trays are described in this paper. Weir flow contributes to the liquid
height on a tray, and this height is important for the design and operation
of trayed columns. Comparisons of available
experimental data with Francis' weir equation and with
new stochastic liquid flow models showed that the traditionally used
Francis' equation needs modification. The stochastic flow models link the
weir flow to the flow mechanisms upstream of the tray outlet. These upstream
mechanisms provide the input needed for a new weir crest equation. The
existence of a so-called 'edge-vortex' (a horizontal roll cell at the
boundary of the gassed and the ungassed region) is shown to play an
important role, when a calming zone is present upstream of the outlet weir.
E070021 On the lower operating range of sieve and
valve trays
[Abstract]: A model of the lower operating limits of
distillation and absorption trays is described in this paper. The model
requires the simultaneous solution of two equations describing (1) liquid
flow across the tray and over the outlet weir, and (2) countercurrent liquid
flow through the free hole area of the tray. The second equation stems from
models of a tray without downcomers; this equation was validated by means of
available test data. The model gives liquid height and weep fraction as a
function of gas and liquid flow rates, for a given tray layout. As shown, it
permits calculation of the gas flow rate at weep and seal point, in a
coherent way. Examples illustrate the use of the method in calculating the
pt. sition of the weeping range of a tray and its relation to tray
efficiency.
E070022 Gas-- non Newtonian Liquid flow Through Globe
and Gate Valves
[Abstract] :Experimental investigations have
been carried out to evaluate the two-phase pressure drop across half inch
globe and gate valves for gas non-Newtonian Liquid flow. The non Newtonian
liquids used were different concentrations of dilute solutions of the sodium
salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC), which behaved as pseudo plastic
liquids. Generalized correlations in terms of the various physical and
dynamic variables of the system have been developed for prediction of the
two phase frictional pressure drop for each valve.Statistical analysis of
the correlations suggest that they are of acceptable accuracy.
E070023 Color indicators show when valves are open or
closed
[Abstract]: Mininert (photo bottom left) valves
for laboratory glassware and syringes offer push button operation with color
coding--green to open and red to close. Valve bodies are PTFE with a
stainless-steel stem. When used in laboratory glassware, these valves
provide leak- tight closure with syringe access to screw-cap and crimp- top
vials, test tubes. flasks and reaction chambers.
E070024 Operate valves easily, and eliminate operator
fatigue
[Abstract]: Easi-Drive (photo, middle) is a
portable valve-operating system for use with manual valves in situations
where valve size, pressure rating or work environment would otherwise demand
a dedicated actuator. This system contains three elements: drive gun, valve
coupler and power pack.
E070025 This pneumatically operated valve handles a
variety of fluids
[Abstract]:The Type 2712 Pneumatically operated
Globe Control Valve incorporates a self adjusting gland tested at more than
2 million cycles. This valve handles neutra] and aggressive fluids, 150-psi
steam and gases up to 365 deg F.
E070026 Severe duty applications are served by these
ball valves
[Abstract] :This line of 0.5 in. trunion style ball
valves (photo right) was designed specifically for severe-duty applications.
Available in two- way and three way configurations, these valves are rated
to 10,000 psi. The two way ball valve offers complete shutoff with a 1/4
turn while the three way valve requires a 1/2 turn to change port outlets.
E070027 These sealless valves prevent excess system
pressure
[Abstract] :These regulating valves are designed with a
tapered plunger and valve seat that are isolated by a Viton or Teflon
diaphragm between the wet end of the valve and the valve top. When excess
pressure overcomes the adjustable spring- pressure on the plunger, the
plunger lifts off the seat allowing fluid to bypass and reduce system
pressure.
E070028 This valve controls boiler feed-pump
recirculation
[Abstract] :The Multi-Z, severe-service control
valve[photo right), is designed to handle high pressure drop applications
where entrained solids are a problem. The valve features a multi stage trim
design that eliminates cavitation and provides extended trim life.
E070029 Meter industrial process-fluid or plant-water
flow
[Abstract] :With its advanced differential-pressure flow
technology, the new V2 System flow meter (photo, upper center) features
built-in flow conditioning and requires minimum upstream and downstream
straight-run piping when installed. The V2 System can measure flows from 40
to 7,500gal/min, depending on the line size, and comes ready to install with
a built-in 3-way valve that isolates the transmitter from the process-fluid
flow for easy maintenance.
E070030 Control Valves for Corrosive Service
[Abstract] :When dealing with corrosive fluids,
not only is material compatibility a concern but also the type of stem seal.
The most common valve seal is the Teflon~R chevron ring. If additional
sealing is required, an environmental packing system such as the REK packing
is available. For the fluids that just can't leak, a bellow-sealed valve is
the best choice. A bellow-sealed bonnet utilizes a metal bellow to seal the
process fluid from the valve stem. This allows for the valve stem to move
while maintaining a positive seal. These are used in applications where the
fluid is toxic, corrosive, or expensive.
E070031 A multiport valve enhances counter current
ion exchange
[Abstract]: PuriTech (Dessel, Beilgium; Edlinks che.com/6514-536)
has developed a continuous ion-exchange system, called Ionex, which uses up
to 75% less water and requires about half the volume of ion-exchange resin,
compared with traditional fixed-bed systems, says PuriTech projects director
Filip Rochette.
E070032 Market change and growth
[Abstract]: New requirements for LNG, ethanol, tar sands
nanotechnology, and biotechnology will boost the industrial valve market to
a record.
E070033 News from the VMA
[Abstract]: The valve manufacturers association
of America (VMA, Washington, D.C.) reports an optimistic view of 2005,
according to a survey of its members all respondents to the December 2005
survey said they expected to end2005 with higher sales than in 2004.
E070034 The better safety choice
[Abstract]:In pressure relief applications, the
rupture pin has simplicity and superior accuracy for pollution--free
operation and rapid valve resetting, with uses in pressure relief', pressure
isolation or flow diverting. Unlike rupture disks, the pin is not subject to
premature fatigue failures or accuracy variations with ambient temperature
changes.

E070036 Control valve is an industry leader
[Abstract] :Emerson Process Management has a new Fisher
GX control valve that the company says delivers industry-leading smart
technology, flexibility, and ease of use. The Design GX brings the benefits
of' unmatched technology and reliability to control valves.
E070037 Pristine Processing
[Abstract] :Valve selection is a critical
consideration in the design of any high purity processing system. The chosen
valve must be fully drainable to ensure the complete discharge of the
process fluid, and it must seal the fluid in a manner that minimizes
entrapment of any residue.
E070038 Improving Rotary Valve Performance
[Abstract]: One component that is sometimes
overlooked when troubleshooting pneumatic conveying systems is the
rotary valve that feeds bulk materials into the system. Nevertheless, gas
leakage from a rotary valve can indeed interfere with the flaw of solids
into the valve, especially if the leakage is not considered when the
conveying gas blower is sized or a suitable compensation method for
the gas leakage is not provided.
E070039 FOCUS ON Solids Feeding
[Abstract]: The Material Master Power Fill FIBC
Filling System (photo, top left) features a patent-pending rotating and
traversing bag--fill head that lowers and extends toward the operator, to
ease bag loading. The modular unit features powered frame-height adjustment,
an electro polished material inlet tube, an inflatable spout seal, an inlet
fill valve with bulk and dribble positions, an Allen-Bradley PLC with a
touch screen operator interface.
E070040 Valve that reflects European thinking is now
available in North America
[Abstract] : An integrated, digital
control-valve platform that has already made its mark in Europe and Asia is
being introduced to the North American market by Emerson Process Management'
s Fisher Controls Div. (Marshalltown, Iowa; edlinks, che. com/4818 537) The
GX-DVC2000 valve offers a variety of features, among them compactness, ease
of maintenance (a field reversible actuator, fewer parts, and an
anticorrosion finish standard, For example).reduced engineering time(a link
age free, non contact interface, and no need for actuator sizing), ease of
commissioning, and high reliability, says the firm.
E070041 Customize your' high purity valve-round,
square, big or small
[Abstract] :This Firm has introduced a compact
PTFE Bellows solenoid valve that can be customized for almost any high
purity liquid application. The basic valve design is pressure balanced, and
is rated for inlet pressures to 140 psi. Depending on the orifice size that
is specified, back pressure is rated up to 70 psi. While the valve is
designed for quick opening, normally closed applications, it can be modified
for many types of service. In larger pipe sizes, a "pilot- assisted" design
is available For higher flow requirements. Customizable attributes include
the size, shape, mounting, body material, port configuration, piping
connections and coil type.
E070042 Hygienic diaphragm valves don't call for
special treatment
[Abstract] :This firm now offers low -sulfur
-content forged bodies with extended weld tangents in its Pure-Flo Hygienic
Diaphragm valve product line(photo),The line features forged 316L stainless
steel material, with sulfur content compliant to ASME Bioprocessing
Equipment 2002 Standard, Table DT-3. Additionally the weld tangents of the
valve bodies are equivalent to the weld tangent lengths specified for ASME
BPE compliant fittings.
E070043 Gaining Digital Capabilities with An
Intelligent Valve Interface
[Abstract] :Over the past decade, operating
companies throughout the chemical process industries (CPI) have experienced
changes in their work environments that have irrevocably changed many plant
operating environments. Among the paradigm shifts that now characterize
many CPI work environments: The work force is routinely being challenged
with more tasks and responsibilities with fewer personnel.
E070044 Size Safety-Relief Valves for Any Conditions
[Abstract] :Safety-relief valves(SRVs)and
rupture disks are typically used to protect equipment from excessive
overpressure. Typical scenarios that can result in such overpressure in
excess of the vessels MAWP (maximum-allowable working pressure) include
external fire, blocked outlet line, power failure, loss of cooling water or
steam, thermal expansion, excess inlet flow, accumulation of non
condensables, failure of check or control valve, exchanger tube rupture,
runaway reaction, and human error (for example, opening or closing the wrong
valve). These and other scenarios are (discussed in more detail elsewhere
[1].
E070045 TRAY COLUMN DESIGN :Keep Control of the
Details
[Abstract] :When a process engineer specifies a
trayed distillation or stripping tower, the task of choosing the right kind
of tray sieve tray, valve tray or any of a variety of proprietary cross
flow trays, for example - is an obvious one and has been widely covered in
the engineering literature. Less obvious, however, are the importance of
interacting intelligently with the equipment vendor about a host of other
tray and column- related details, and of aiming for proper engineering
coordination between various parties involved during column design and
fabrication to ensure a smooth erection and startup.
E070046 CONTROL VALVES WITH BUILT IN DIAGNOSTICS
[Abstract] :If the industrial valve market can
be taken a marker for economic growth, then things are looking up. Sales of
industrial valves worldwide are projected to teach US 50 billion by 2010,
compared to the just under US 40 billion mark set in 2004, according to a
report of the Mcllvaine Co. (Northfield, 111). However, last year, the ARC
Advisory Group (Dedham, Mass) saw China as the only country world wide with
double-digit growth for control valve Suppliers, with a
compunded-annual-growth rate approaching 11% through 2008.
E070047 Cavitation not a problem for this control
valve
[Abstract]: The Multi-Z control valve (photo,
top center) is specifically designed to handle high-pressure-drop
applications where entrained solids are a problem. The valve is “ideal” for
system start up and boiler-feed water recirculation.
E070048 High cycle valve
[Abstract]:Although Metso Automation' s
Shrewsbury, Mass;edlinks. che. com/,4823-538) Jamesbury Wafer--Sphere
high-performance butterfly valve was commercialized over five years ago, its
performance in high cycle applications has now been demonstrated. After
years of installed service at air separation plants, the valve's life-cycle
have been shown to be 4-5 times longer than those recorded for valves using
conventional components, says marketing manager Brian Bombard.
E070049 Plastic ball valve provides graduated flow
control
[Abstract ] : By combining the strength of
linear flow output with the proven ball design of this company' s Type 346
Ball Valve (photo top left), the new Type 110 Control Ball Valve provides a
cost-effective way to allow for a gradual increase in flow.
E070050 Software can help you decide if pinch points
are valve-related
[Abstract] :The Smart Draw Process Designer
fluid-flow simulation software, which is part of this firm' s Sinet//Chemproprocess
engineering suite, is a handy tool to help engineers identify and rectify
pinch points in utility systems (photo, lower left).
E070051 This chatter -proof, leak proof check valve
seals in any position
[Abstract] :Regardless of its mounting position
the Series CKM diaphragm check valves are said to maintain a bubble-tight
seal, giving them a performance advantage over conventional ball type check
valves. The patented diaphragm automatically positions itself against the
valve seat in an identical location every time, says the firm improving
reliability, reducing wear and extending service,
E070052 Control valve is suited for severe
boiler-feed water conditions
[Abstract] :The flowserve Multi-Z is designed to
handle high--pressure drop applications where entrained solids are a
problem. As such, it is said to be particularly well suited for boiler-feed
water recirculation and system startup (photo far left).
E070053 Linear valve monitors are ideal for sanitary
applications
[Abstract]:Many sanitary diaphragm valves must
be closely monitored and controlled. However, conventional monitors that are
often used in these applications rely on mechanical switches with complex
linkages, which are prone to reliability problems and are not designed to
withstand the rigorous wash downs that are typical of high-purity process
environments.
E070054 This control, valve diagnoses potential
problems early on
[Abstract]:The Fisher Fieldvue Digital Valve
Controller has added new performance -diagnostics capabilities, which aim to
simplify control--valve maintenance by detecting emerging conditions
at the valve that could lead to valve failure.
E070055 This transfer valve outperforms conventional
cast plug valves
[Abstract]:The patented Series JR- 33 "Zero
Leak" transfer valve is said to be the only transfer valve available with
retractable, fully covered elastomer shoes (photo, above left). This design
reduces operating torque and avoids dragging an 0-ring seal around the valve
(which can result in seal wear and damage the valve-body bore).
E070056 Pick the Right Valve
[Abstract] :Know the pros and cons of each valve
type to help select the right one for the job. Valves are used in pipeline
systems to control the flow rate, the pressure, or the flow direction of a
fluid. They can turn on, turn off, regulate, modulate or isolate the fluid.
E070057 Full Steam Ahead!
[Abstract] :Are your desuper heaters and spray
nozzles creating water problems? SAMSON Series 3280 Steam Conditioning
Valves will let you keep cool and your steam dry! Cooling water is injected
through a specially designed flow divider directly into the valve body. This
process atomizes the water, ensuring complete evaporation. With no water
droplets to worry about, trim erosion is a thing of the past. What's more,
SAMSON valves are guaranteed to provide unparalleled accuracy and range
ability for applications up to ANSI 2500.
E070058 Valve Selection Handbook. Fifth Edition. By
Peter Smith and R.W. Zappe. Gulf Professional
[Abstract]:Many types of valves are used in the
process industries. This book has been written to help the piping specifying
engineer choose valves for a specific application, ones that meet the design
parameters of the process service. This new edition has been edited and
contributed to by Mr. Smith, and it is based upon the original text (with
some subtle changes) written by Mr. Zappe. The editor has added new chapters
on actuators, double block and bleed ball valves, and valve locking devices.
E070059 Pressure relief for fail cars of an hydrous
ammonia
[Abstract] :A newly designed pressure relief
valve (PRV) is available for railcars that handle an hydrous ammonia
(photo, bottom left).Stainless steel is used only for critical seating
surfaces, such as seats and retainers, and a stainless steel overlay and
retainer prevents rust buildup and corrosion that is commonly experienced in
ammonia service-at a cost below that of an all-stainless steel valve. Wire
seals yield a tamper evident design, and serial numbers are used to assure
trace-ability.
E070060 New services manage loops, alarms or network
security
[Abstract] :This firm now offers life Time Performance
Improvement Services, which includes Loop Management, Alarm Management and
Network Security services. These services work together to help customers
maximize the performance of their installed automation assets. The loop
Management Services, for instance, begin with a thorough evaluation of all
current plant or unit control loops. The evaluation includes comprehensive
online diagnostics of all control valves. Loop and valve diagnostics are
performed utilizing models created from a combination of real time data and
historical information (collected via OPC).The service is available for
virtually all process control systems and all field devices Foundation field
bus or other digital field protocols are not required. Critical under-
performing loops are prioritized for remediation, and if' desired, the
firm's process control experts can perform the actual loop turning and
recommend valve maintenance activities. A report is provided that documents
the loop Performance improvements that were achieved; and ongoing remote
monitoring, reporting, prioritization and onsite remediation services are
available to help ensure optimal loop performance over time.
E070061 For Sampling, Match the Value to the Task
[Abstract] :Instrumentation has come a long way
in its ability to measure process temperature, pressure, conductivity, pH
turbidity, density and other parameters online. Even so, there remains a
wide range of industrial (as Well as commercial) situations in which paints
need to take samples of their process streams or batches for offline
laboratory analysis or validation. Sometimes over looked is the importance
of choosing the right kind of valve for doing so.
E070062 Ball valve: A new ball valve from George
Fischer

of plastic piping systems, has developed this ball valve in response to the
needs of customers and the desire to further improve an excellent product.
The type 546 offers plant engineers and operators an innovative system with
many useful extension modules.
E070063 Conbraco
[Abstract]: For almost 75 years, Conbraco
Industries has been a leader in the development of valve and other flow
control products for industrial applications. In the 1900s Conbraco was one
of the first U.S. valve manufactures to earn ISO 9001 registration. Now
Conbraco is leading the industry in pursuit of product and service quality
for its customers world wide.
E070064 Inline
[Abstract]: Inline Industries, a California
corporation, manufactures industrial valve products for the U.S. and
international marker place. Inline specializes in the production of high
performance, corrosion resistant ball valves and automated systems. We
deliver exceptional value to our customers by providing the three most
important elements they look for in a manufacturer: quality, availability,
and price.
E070065 Predictive maintenance solution gives
answers, not just data
[Abstract]: “The undesirable behavior of control
valves is the biggest single contributor to poor control-loop performance
and the destabilization of process operation,” claims Bruce Hohnson, vice
president of instruments for the Fisher valve division of Emerson Process
Management (St. Louis, Mo. ;emerson.com).
E070066 Using the idea gas specific heat ratio for
Relief-valve Sizing
[Abstract]: In API Recommended PRCTIVE 520, The
basis for evaluating the ideal gas specific heat ratio has been modified
from standard conditions (in the sixth edition) to relieving conditions (in
the seventh edition).
E070067 Peering inside the low –noise valve
[Abstract]: Noise restrictions for industrial
facilities have been in effect in the U.S. since 1972 and there are
comparable regulations in many other countries. Table 1 summarizes the U.S.
regulations set forth by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA). Modulating control valves are typically
pressure-reducing devices; and when handling gases or stem, they can create
substantial sound energy as a byproduct of the pressure-reducing process.
Event a pressure reduction of merely about 2:1 say from 30 psia to 15 psia,
gas passing through the valve orifice reaches sonic velocity, and according
generates noise.
E070068 Heavy-duty Control Valves Live Long and
Prosper
[Abstract]: There is no such thing as a
universal control valve. If the velocity of the process fluid passing
through the valve body is high, a heavy-duty control valve is recommended.
Heavy-duty valves minimize problems with cavitation, erosion, mechanical
vibration, short life, erratic control and noise.
E070069 Fires, Vessels and the Pressure Relief Valve
[Abstract]: Determine the area of an external
fire zone, the heat transferred to liquids inside protected vessels, the
venting rate, and then calculate the PRV area.
E070070 How valve Performance Affects the Control
Loop
[Abstract]: control loop consists of the
process, the measurement, the controller, and a final control element.
Optimal process control depends on all of these components working properly.
Hence, before tuning a loop, one must verify that each component is
operating properly and that the design is appropriate. I The optimal PID
tuning should be chosen after making sure all of the components are working
properly. Field experience has shown us that good tuning can be more
important than equipment performance itself. We will discuss a method to
determine if the valve is performing well while the process is running. We
will show how a poorly performing valve will have a minimal effecton control
loop performance if the tuning parameters are not optimal. On the other
hand, ifa control loop is tuned to achieve performance, the control valve
behavior Will have a major impact on performance.
E070071 How to Choose a ‘Smart’ Valve System
[Abstract]: Over the past few years,
flow-control engineers have been catching on to the trend of installing
"smart" valves in their facilities (CE, March 1998, p. 32; February 1999, p.
41). Sales of smart valves, which have a microprocessor that controls the
units' positioners, have been increasing at approximately 50% a year for the
past five years, according to Automation Research Corp. (Dedham, Mass.).
About one third of the control valves sold today are equipped with smart
positioners. Within the next ten years, it is anticipated that more than 95%
of all valves sold will be equipped with smart positioners. When deciding to
install these flow-control devices, plant engineers are usually bombarded
with information-- and a lot of hype. This article demystifies the
overwhelming task of choosing a valve system that is correct for the
application at hand. An explanation of the technology is presented, as well
as a step-by-step selection guide, along with the technology that will be
available in the future.
E070072 Simplified Valve Sizing for Laminar Flows
[Abstact]: Valve sizing equations for control
valves are widely accepted when flow is turbulent[1]. These equations are
not valid when the flow is laminar or transitional (Rev < 10,000). A method
has been derived to correct turbulent valve Cv values for laminar and
transitional flow. This technique is much simpler to use than the current
method [1]. The equations are derived from fundamental principles, unlike
the empirical method in current use.
E070073 Stretching valve functionality
[Abstract]: The essence of any valve is control,
but that capability is usually limited to one specific function. Today,
valvemakers are helping their customers in the chemical process industries
(CPI) optimize control, through imaginative new designs, or additions or
modifications to existing products. Everybody is looking to get their
process running better, more efficiently, and with improved productivity,"
says Ron Bartosik, marketing director for Burkert Contromatic Corp.
E070074 Predict control valve noise
[Abstract]: Noise is a byproduct of a control
valve doing its job. However, sometimes the sound you hear may be a warning
of cavitation damage. The noise, if loud enough, may also pose a health
hazard to nearby employees. To protect workers from hearing damage, OSHA has
set a noise-exposure limit of a weighted 90-dBA maximum over 8 hours [1].
So, it is important to know just how loud the noise from a control valve
will be.

E070079 Ask the Experts Control Valves
[Abstract]: When selecting control valves, one
must consider the process, maintenance, reliability, process control and,
above all, safety, requirements for the service application, as well as
economic issues. Control valve technology falls into two categories- rotary
and linear. The major different between them is the type and direction of
movement utilized to vary the restriction of the valve. Rotary valves
feature butterfly (lined and eccentric), plug (eccentric) and ball
(segmented, full and notched ) designs.

E070087 How Did this Happen?
[Abstract] :The PiPer Alpha platform drilled for
oil and processed natural gas from other platforms. A maintenance crew was
working on a pump in the gas processing unit. As part of their work, they
removed a relief valve from the pump's discharge line - but did NOT install
a regular blind flange to cover the opening. They did not complete the
repair work that shift, so they told the shift supervisor that the pump
should not be used. Unfortunately, this message was not given to the
operators on the next shift.
E070088 Magnetically Coupled Valve Will increase
Safety and Reduce Environmental Conta mination
[Abstract]: Conventional ball valves utilize
elastomeric or mechanical stem seals to contain the transmitted medium. If
these seals fail, the medium escapes to the environment. This is agrave
concern if the medium is a potential environmental pollutant or health
hazard. The Roetelmann design eliminates this potential by encapsulating the
stem and seals in a welded canister, should the seals fail the medium cannot
escape to the atmosphere. Previous designs were unable to provide an
indication that the internal ball had rotated to the desired open or closed
position when the valve was actuated. The inclusion of a non contact sensor
has provided a technical solution for this problem. The valves are produced
with a variety of construction and seal materials to meet customer
requirements. Welded or flanged end connections, locking devices to meet
OSHA requirements and actuators are available. Roetelmann GmbH www. icflow.

if you understand the physics involved. Symptoms of cavitation include noise
(it sounds like gravel flowing through the line), vibration, loss of
efficiency, and physical damage. Valves subject to cavitation erode until
components rupture or leak.
