E070001  Combined safety. Rupture disk directly in front of the safety valve

[Abstract]: Safety considerations when combining rupture discs  in series with a safety valve are considered. This includes the use of a non-splintering disc. The combination of the two systems results in the advantages of both. The rupture disk and the re-closing of relief out-lets by the valve allows plant operations to continue.

E070002  Tyco fulfills all tanker valve requirements

[Abstract]: The UK road tanker manufacturer Clayton Commercials has met most of its tanker valve requirements using a single source, Tyco Valves and Controls. Tankers produced by Clayton are used throughout industry for transporting a wide range of products, from food to hazardous chemicals and bitumen. The valve requirements are dictated by the application itself or the end user's specifications. For use on chemical carrying road tankers, Tyco supplies a large number of lined butterfly valves from its Neotecha range, incorporating PTFE-lined bodies and PFA encapsulated-discs. These can withstand the majority of chemical products. To meet the special requirements of its bitumen road tankers, Clayton uses Winn high performance butterfly valves with plasma nitrided discs and inconel nitrided seats. Inherently fire-safe, these metal to metal valves are ideal for withstanding the abrasive nature of the bitumen and the extreme temperatures of up to 250°C. For hygienic duties, Clayton uses Keystone rubber lined butterfly valves with a one-piece wafer-thin disc/stem providing positive disc control with minimum flow obstruction. Featuring a crevice-free design, the Keystone valve eliminates the possibility of product entrapment and contamination. Clayton also uses a number of one-piece Ultra-Seal ball valves from the Hindle range for air lines, sampling points and when users have specified ball valves.

E070003  Check valve caused plant explosion

[Abstract]: A new report from the US EPA and OSHA indicates that the internal failure and blowout of a check valve was to blame for a chemicals explosion at Shell Chemical’s plant at Deer Park, TX in 1997. This caused a flammable gas leak and vapour cloud which ignited. A copy of the report can be found athttp://www.epa.gov/ceppo/acchis.html. This includes recommendations on preventing such an accident from occurring in the future.

E070004  Fires, vessels and the pressure relief valve

[Abstract]: Pressure relief valve (PRV) design for vessel protection from fire is not straightforward and four scenarios: a liquid full vessel; an adequate liquid level; an inadequate liquid level; and gas or vapour filled vessel, must be considered. The application of appropriate equations to determine the area of an external fire zone, heat transferred to liquids in protected vessels, the venting rate and finally to calculate the PRV area, for the first two scenarios are described and complement the two other scenarios examined in an earlier article.

E070005  New diaphragm valve interlock will not jam

[Abstract]:  Smith Flow Control has introduced the new Ellis type GG safety interlock which is designed for use with diaphragm valves. This can be adjusted to any variations in the valve's final closed position to enable the key to be freed. Under normal operating environments, the closed position of a diaphragm valve can vary; as most interlocks require valves to have a set closing position before the key can be released to lock the valve, this variation can have an adverse effect on an interlock's operational effectiveness. It can even result in the key becoming jammed. The Ellis GG interlock overcomes this problem by allowing the closed, key-release position to be easily adjusted to accommodate any variations in the diaphragm valve's positioning.

E070006  Innovative safety solution for valve change-over procedure

[Abstract]: Process safety specialist Smith Flow Control has designed an innovative interlocking system for the change-over sequence between relief valves at Norsk Hydro's Rafnes Petrochemical Refinery in southern Norway. At the refinery, the change-over of relief valves for the cooling water system is achieved using handwheel-operated 3-way diverter globe valves, which divert the process flow from one relief valve to another. Under these conditions, partial valve operation to its mid-position must be strictly controlled.

E070011  A class of discontinuous dynamical systems I. An ideal gas -liquid system

[Abstract]: When a liquid and a gas are sent into a closed system and withdrawn through a single outlet, discontinuous behaviour results. Two different models are applicable to this system depending on whether the liquid or the gas flows out. The system switches between the gas flow and the liquid flow incessant]y, reaching a state of sliding motion (F i ] ippov, Differential Equations with Discontinous Right and Sides. Mathematics and its Applications (Soviet Series), Kluwer, Dordrecht, 1988). It is shown that the state of sliding motion is reached from all starting positions. The sliding motion is also shown to be stable. The steady state of the sliding motion can also be considered as a time- averaged steady state. Simulation results support these predictions. Similar results are obtained in the presence of a control valve.

E070018  Flow Reaction Forces upon Blowdown of Safety Valves

[Abstract] :'The activation of safety valves causes the development of flow reaction forces that have to be transferred in an adequate way via the piping to the steel structure or via the connected vessel, into the foundation.  If the safety valve outlet piping is connected to a blowdown system or, in case of blowing off into the atmosphere, are equipped with a T-piece at the outlet,  the stationary reaction forces are compensated completely. The transient opening process, however, develops flow reaction forces which culminate in peaks of short duration.  In this article, a simple method will be proposed for the estimation of the resulting reaction forces as a function of the length of the pipe at the safety valve outlet. CFD calculations and blowdown tests executed with a full-lift safety valve have confirmed this method on principle. Special importance is attributed to the short duration of the effect of the reaction forces which seems to have only a negligible impact on the supporting steel structure.

[Abstract]: The lack of a tank emergency pressure valve resulted in the death of one worker and the evacuation of 26 residents and a “shelter in place” warning for 1500 others living near the D.D.Williamson & Co. chemical plant in Louisville.

E070020  Weir flow and liquid height on sieve and valve trays

[Abstract]Mechanisms for the flow of liquid over outlet weirs of distillation and absorption trays are described in this paper. Weir flow contributes to the liquid height on a tray, and this height is important for the design and operation of trayed columns. Comparisons of available

experimental data with Francis' weir equation and with new stochastic liquid flow models showed that the traditionally used Francis' equation needs modification. The stochastic flow models link the weir flow to the flow mechanisms upstream of the tray outlet. These upstream mechanisms provide the input needed for a new weir crest equation. The existence of a so-called 'edge-vortex' (a horizontal roll cell at the boundary of the gassed and the ungassed region) is shown to play an important role, when a calming zone is present upstream of the outlet weir.

E070021  On the lower operating range of sieve and valve trays

[Abstract]: A model of the lower operating limits of distillation and absorption trays is described in this paper. The model requires the simultaneous solution of two equations describing (1) liquid flow across the tray and over the outlet weir, and (2) countercurrent liquid flow through the free hole area of the tray. The second equation stems from models of a tray without downcomers; this equation was validated by means of available test data. The model gives liquid height and weep fraction as a function of gas and liquid flow rates, for a given tray layout. As shown, it permits calculation of the gas flow rate at weep and seal point, in a coherent way. Examples illustrate the use of the method in calculating the pt. sition of the weeping range of a tray and its relation to tray efficiency.

E070022  Gas-- non Newtonian Liquid flow Through Globe and Gate Valves

[Abstract] :Experimental investigations have been carried out to evaluate the two-phase pressure drop across half inch globe and gate valves for gas non-Newtonian Liquid flow. The non Newtonian liquids used were different concentrations of dilute solutions of the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC), which behaved as pseudo plastic liquids. Generalized correlations in terms of the various physical and dynamic variables of the system have been developed for prediction of the two phase frictional pressure drop for each valve.Statistical analysis of the correlations suggest that they are of acceptable accuracy.

E070030  Control Valves for Corrosive Service

[Abstract] :When dealing with corrosive fluids, not only is material compatibility a concern but also the type of stem seal. The most common valve seal is the Teflon~R chevron ring. If additional sealing is required, an environmental packing system such as the REK packing is available. For the fluids that just can't leak, a bellow-sealed valve is the best choice. A bellow-sealed bonnet utilizes a metal bellow to seal the process fluid from the valve stem. This allows for the valve stem to move while maintaining a positive seal. These are used in applications where the fluid is toxic, corrosive, or expensive.

E070067  Peering inside the low –noise valve

[Abstract]: Noise restrictions for industrial facilities have been in effect in the U.S. since 1972 and there are comparable regulations in many other countries. Table 1 summarizes the U.S. regulations set forth by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Modulating control valves are typically pressure-reducing devices; and when handling gases or stem, they can create substantial sound energy as a byproduct of the pressure-reducing process. Event a pressure reduction of merely about 2:1 say from 30 psia to 15 psia, gas passing through the valve orifice reaches sonic velocity, and according generates noise.

E070068  Heavy-duty Control Valves Live Long and Prosper

[Abstract]: There is no such thing as a universal control valve. If the velocity of the process fluid passing through the valve body is high, a heavy-duty control valve is recommended. E070070  How valve Performance Affects the Control Loop

[Abstract]: control loop consists of the process, the measurement, the controller, and a final control element. Optimal process control depends on all of these components working properly. Hence, before tuning a loop, one must verify that each component is operating properly and that the design is appropriate. I  The optimal PID tuning should be chosen after making sure all of the components are working properly. Field experience has shown us that good tuning can be more important than equipment performance itself.   We will discuss a method to determine if the valve is performing well while the process is running. We will show how a poorly performing valve will have a minimal effecton control loop performance if the tuning parameters are not optimal. On the other hand, ifa control loop is tuned to achieve performance, the control valve behavior Will have a major impact on performance.

E070071  How to Choose a ‘Smart’ Valve System

[Abstract]: Over the past few years, flow-control engineers have been catching on to the trend of installing "smart" valves in their facilities (CE, March 1998, p. 32; February 1999, p. 41). Sales of smart valves, which have a microprocessor that controls the units' positioners, have been increasing at approximately 50% a year for the past five years, according to Automation Research Corp. (Dedham, Mass.). About one third of the control valves sold today are equipped with smart positioners. Within the next ten years, it is anticipated that more than 95% of all valves sold will be equipped with smart positioners. When deciding to install these flow-control devices, plant engineers are usually bombarded with information-- and a lot of hype. This article demystifies the overwhelming task of choosing a valve system that is correct for the application at hand. An explanation of the technology is presented, as well as a step-by-step selection guide, along with the technology that will be available in the future.

E070072  Simplified Valve Sizing for Laminar Flows

[Abstact]: Valve sizing equations for control valves are widely accepted when flow is turbulent[1]. These equations are not valid when the flow is laminar or transitional (Rev < 10,000).  A method has been derived to correct turbulent valve Cv values for laminar and transitional flow. This technique is much simpler to use than the current method [1]. The equations are derived from fundamental principles, unlike the empirical method in current use.

E070073  Stretching valve functionality

[Abstract]: The essence of any valve is control, but that capability is usually limited to one specific function. Today, valvemakers are helping their customers in the chemical process industries (CPI) optimize control, through imaginative new designs, or additions or modifications to existing products. Everybody is looking to get their process running better, more efficiently, and with improved productivity," says Ron Bartosik, marketing director for Burkert Contromatic Corp.

E070074  Predict control valve noise

[Abstract]: Noise is a byproduct of a control valve doing its job. However, sometimes the sound you hear may be a warning of cavitation damage. The noise, if loud enough, may also pose a health hazard to nearby employees. To protect workers from hearing damage, OSHA has set a noise-exposure limit of a weighted 90-dBA maximum over 8 hours [1]. So, it is important to know just how loud the noise from a control valve will be.

E070088  Magnetically Coupled Valve Will increase Safety and Reduce Environmental Conta mination

[Abstract]: Conventional ball valves utilize elastomeric or mechanical stem seals to contain the transmitted medium. If these seals fail, the medium escapes to the environment. This is agrave concern if the medium is a potential environmental pollutant or health hazard. The Roetelmann design eliminates this potential by encapsulating the stem and seals in a welded canister, should the seals fail the medium cannot escape to the atmosphere. Previous designs were unable to provide an indication that the internal ball had rotated to the desired open or closed position when the valve was actuated. The inclusion of a non contact sensor has provided a technical solution for this problem. The valves are produced with a variety of construction and seal materials to meet customer requirements. Welded or flanged end connections, locking devices to meet OSHA requirements and actuators are available. Roetelmann GmbH www. icflow. com/roetelmann. php
